UK Imposes Sanctions on Perpetrators of Violence Against Civilians on Syria’s Coast

The United Kingdom on Friday, 19 January 2025, imposed sanctions on individuals and entities linked to Syria’s Ministry of Defense under the transitional Syrian government, citing their involvement in acts of violence committed against civilians in Syria.
Some of those sanctioned were also accused of having financially supported the former regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
In a statement, the British government said the measures target individuals involved in violence in Syria’s coastal region in March, as well as acts committed during the country’s civil war.
The sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans. Those sanctioned include Ghayath Dalla, Miqdad Louay Fathiye, Imad Khouri, and Mudallal Khouri, all described as former officers and supporters of the Assad regime.
The sanctions also extend to Mohammad al-Jassem, known as Abu Amsha, Saifaddin Bolad, and the Hamza Division, Sultan Murad Division, and Suleiman Shah Brigade, which are affiliated with the Ministry of Defense under the current Syrian government, in connection with events that took place along the Syrian coast.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated: “Achieving accountability and justice for all Syrians is essential to ensuring a successful and sustainable political settlement in Syria.”
Britain had previously eased some of the sanctions imposed on Syria as part of efforts to support reconstruction following the collapse of the Assad regime a year ago, while stressing that it will continue to act against those seeking to undermine peace in the Middle East country.
