Nechirvan Barzani: Damascus–SDF Agreement Must Be Implemented Under International Supervision

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani stressed the need to implement the agreement signed between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Damascus under international supervision, noting that the Kurdistan Region shares a common vision with France regarding the situation in Syria.

His remarks came during a joint press conference with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot in Erbil on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2026. Barzani said, “We highly appreciate the important role played by President Macron in achieving a ceasefire in Syria, resuming dialogue between Damascus and the SDF, and supporting the rights of the Kurds and other components.”

He added, “Together with the French foreign minister, we emphasized the necessity of implementing the agreement signed between the SDF and Damascus under international supervision.”

Earlier on Thursday, Barrot said from Baghdad, “I came to Baghdad on an important mission; standing together against ISIS is essential, and France will continue the fight against terrorism.”

Barrot held a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein, in Baghdad, and earlier in the day met Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani in Damascus.
