The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced the arrest of several internal security personnel in Suwayda after they were accused of insulting local religious symbols, stressing that such behavior does not reflect the principles and values of the country’s security institutions.
In an official statement issued on Sunday, March 15, 2026, the ministry said the relevant authorities had detained the individuals involved, describing the incident as unacceptable conduct and confirming that legal measures would be taken against them in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
The ministry emphasized that Syria is a state that embraces all its citizens from different sects and communities, adding that respecting citizens’ dignity and protecting the religious and social symbols of all components without discrimination is a fundamental principle of state institutions.
It also noted that religious and social diversity in Syria represents a source of richness for society, stressing that maintaining mutual respect among different communities is a key pillar for strengthening stability and civil peace.
The statement came after images circulated on social media in recent days showing members of internal security forces in Suwayda allegedly insulting local religious figures, sparking widespread reactions and calls for accountability.
