The Syrian Ministry of Interior reported that the Counter-Terrorism Department, alongside the Internal Security Command in the Damascus countryside, successfully thwarted a plot aimed at undermining the security of the capital, Damascus.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, 11 April 2026, the ministry said that specialized units had successfully identified a woman within the cell as she attempted to carry out a sabotage operation by planting an explosive device in front of the home of a religious figure near the Mariamite Church in the Bab Toma area.
The ministry added that the units were able to neutralize the threat and dismantle the device before it exploded, with no casualties or damage reported. All five members of the cell were arrested.
The ministry confirmed that preliminary investigations revealed the cell’s ties to the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, and that its members had received specialized military training abroad, including advanced skills in planting and rigging explosive devices.
The statement also mentioned that investigations are still underway to uncover the full circumstances of the case and identify all involved parties, with the intention of referring the suspects to the appropriate judiciary following legal procedures.
