Hezbollah denied any connection to a cell accused of plotting the assassination of a religious figure in Damascus.

In a statement issued on Sunday, April 12, 2026, the group said it “has no activity, presence, or affiliation with any party in Syria, and has no presence on Syrian territory,” according to the National News Agency.

Hezbollah also affirmed its commitment to Syria’s security, stability, and the safety of its population in all its components, calling on Syrian authorities to “verify information carefully before making arbitrary accusations,” particularly amid what it described as intelligence efforts aimed at fueling tensions between Lebanon and Syria.

The denial comes after the Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday that it had foiled a sabotage plot involving the planting of an explosive device near the home of a religious figure in the vicinity of the St. Mary Church area of Bab Touma.

The ministry said security units had neutralized the threat and dismantled the device before it detonated, without causing casualties or damage, and arrested members of the cell.

It added that preliminary investigations indicated links between the cell and Hezbollah, noting that its members had received specialized military training abroad, including in the use of improvised explosive devices.
