The Kurdish National Council held an expanded meeting on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, in the city of Qamishlo, dedicated to selecting its official candidates for the upcoming Syrian People’s Assembly elections representing Al-Hasakah Governorate.

The voting results within the meeting saw Ridwan Sido, a leader in the Kurdish Equality Party, and Fasla Yusuf, a member of the Presidency Body of the Kurdish National Council, receive the highest number of votes, leading to their adoption as the council’s official candidates for the upcoming elections.

Suleiman Oso: We Are Working Toward Comprehensive Kurdish Consensus

Suleiman Oso, a member of the Presidency Body of the Kurdish National Council, spoke to Welat TV about the details of the meeting, explaining that participants discussed several political and organizational issues, foremost among them participation in the Syrian People’s Assembly elections.

Oso stressed that current efforts are focused on reaching a Kurdish consensus regarding the elections and the mechanism for participation, noting that Kurdish political forces seek to play an effective role within Syrian state institutions in the future.

He added that the Kurds aspire to participate in the committee tasked with drafting the Syrian constitution within the People’s Assembly, alongside efforts to defend the rights of the Kurdish people and ensure their political representation in the coming phase.

Accelerating Electoral Preparations in Hasakah

Recently, the Supreme Committee for the People’s Assembly Elections issued a decision containing the final list of subcommittees in the electoral districts of Hasakah Governorate, including the districts of Hasakah, Qamishlo, and Derik, in addition to the Kobani district affiliated with Aleppo Governorate.

The Hasakah Governorate includes three electoral districts, allocated three seats for the Hasakah district, four seats for the Qamishlo district, and two seats for the Derik district, while one representative for the Serekaniye area was elected last October.

Meanwhile, Aleppo Governorate’s electoral list includes 32 seats, with elections held on October 25 last year, including two seats designated for the Kobani district, whose elections are scheduled to be completed at a later date.
