Despite Trump’s Warning, Israel Responds to Iranian Missile Launches as Tehran Issues New Threats

The Israeli military announced that its air force had carried out strikes on several targets within a petrochemical complex in the city of Mahshahr in southwestern Iran, hours after Tehran launched missiles toward Israeli territory, despite U.S. calls for restraint and de-escalation.

According to Israel’s Channel 12 on Monday, June 8, 2026, Israel targeted a petrochemical facility in southwestern Iran in addition to other military sites, despite reports indicating that U.S. President Donald Trump had urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to refrain from conducting further attacks.

Trump Urges Restraint

Channel 12 cited a senior U.S. source as saying that Trump, during a phone call with Netanyahu earlier on Monday, asked the Israeli leader not to retaliate against the Iranian missile attack and to allow several more days for negotiations related to a potential agreement with Iran.

On Sunday, Israel also carried out airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs for the first time since the United States announced a ceasefire initiative in Lebanon several days earlier. In the same context, Trump told the Financial Times that an agreement to end the conflict remained achievable, adding: “I make all the decisions, not Netanyahu.”

Iran: U.S. Bases Are Legitimate Targets

In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had targeted the Ramat David Airbase near Nazareth in Israel. The IRGC further declared that U.S. military bases and Israeli interests had become “legitimate targets” because of what it described as hostile actions and violations of agreements concerning Lebanon.

Houthis Announce Navigation Ban

Meanwhile, the Houthi movement announced in a statement on Monday that it had launched a missile attack against what it described as “sensitive” sites in the Jaffa area inside Israel. The group also declared a “complete ban” on Israeli maritime navigation in the Red Sea, stating that all Israeli movements had become military targets for its forces.

Fears of a Wider Conflict

Despite announcements by Washington and Tehran that they were nearing a preliminary agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the two sides have exchanged attacks on multiple occasions, notwithstanding the ceasefire reached in April. The latest developments have intensified regional and international concerns over the possibility of a broader conflict and the failure of diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the crisis.
