Raids and Arrests Target Political Figures in Baghdad Over Corruption Allegations

Iraqi security forces carried out a large-scale deployment in Baghdad's Green Zone in the early hours of Sunday, June 28, 2026, raiding the offices and homes of several political figures.

According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), citing a senior source, a number of suspects in corruption cases were arrested based on confessions made by Deputy Oil Minister Adnan al-Jumaili.

The source added that those detained include members of the Iraqi Council of Representatives whose parliamentary immunity had been lifted, as well as other officials whose names were mentioned in the confessions.

The source said the operation comes as part of Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi's pledge to pursue corrupt officials and those involved in the misappropriation of public funds.

Videos circulating on social media showed security forces deploying heavy military equipment, including tanks, inside the Green Zone.

Meanwhile, the France Press Agency (AFP) quoted a security official as saying that the raids targeted several political figures accused of financial corruption and were carried out under judicial warrants.

The official added that the operation involved the Counter-Terrorism Service and the Iraqi Army. No official statement had been issued at the time of publication.

The operation comes amid a heavy military deployment across several neighborhoods in Baghdad, with reports indicating that the campaign is ongoing and will extend to all areas of the Iraqi capital.
