Amid Trump's Anticipation and Tehran's Denial, U.S. and Iranian Negotiators Head to Doha

The U.S. president said that the anticipated meeting between the United States and Iran in the Qatari capital, Doha, this week "could be important, or it might not," while Tehran denied that any negotiations with the American side would take place in the coming days.
According to Reuters, on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Trump told reporters at the White House that the expected meeting could represent an important milestone, without providing further details about its agenda, while reiterating the need to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
Doha Talks
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the Trump administration intends to send Jared Kushner and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to lead the negotiating team, while Iran is preparing to dispatch its technical delegation to Qatar later this week. Iran Denies
Meanwhile, Iranian negotiating team spokesperson Ismail Baghaei told reporters today that "no negotiations at any level will be held with the American side in the coming days," explaining that a delegation of Iranian experts will travel to Doha to follow up on the implementation of the provision concerning the release of frozen Iranian assets.
Frozen Assets
Iranian state media quoted Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian as saying on Monday that the agreement provides for the release of $6 billion out of $12 billion in Iranian assets frozen in Qatar, in preparation for their transfer back to Iran.
Pezeshkian added that the agreement had also contributed to lifting sanctions on the oil and petrochemical sectors, describing the memorandum as "a major victory for the Iranian people."
Escalation Despite Mediation Efforts
Despite mediation efforts announced by Pakistan and Qatar on Monday to reach a final agreement between the United States and Iran within 60 days, paving the way for a new round of technical talks, tensions and military escalation continue, amid regional and international concerns over the repercussions of the conflict, which has been ongoing since late February, on the security and economy of the region and the world.
