U.S. President Donald Trump has paused military strikes against Iran as Oman intensifies mediation efforts in Tehran aimed at reaching an agreement on maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to informed sources cited by the U.S. news website Axios on Sunday, July 26, 2026, Trump withheld approval on Friday for a new round of military strikes against Iran, signaling Washington's willingness to give ongoing diplomatic efforts a chance.

Omani Mediation

The sources said Trump's decision came just hours after an Omani diplomatic delegation arrived in Tehran to hold talks focused on security in the Strait of Hormuz, amid indications of progress and the possibility of reaching an understanding between the two sides over the weekend.

Suspension of Military Strikes

Omani officials traveled to Tehran on Friday for negotiations, coinciding with Trump's decision to suspend the U.S. military campaign, which had carried out strikes on Iranian targets for 13 consecutive nights.

"Productive" Talks

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismaeel Baghaei described the discussions with the Omani delegation in Tehran as "productive," according to Iran's IRNA news agency. He said both sides would continue political and technical consultations on shared principles and the management of the Strait of Hormuz as part of efforts to reduce regional tensions, adding that commercial shipping through the waterway remains unaffected.

Concerns Over Escalation

Diplomatic mediation between the United States and Iran continues to fluctuate between periods of de-escalation and the risk of renewed confrontation, amid growing regional and international concerns that the two sides may fail to reach a comprehensive agreement to end the conflict that has been ongoing since late February.
