The United States Department of the Treasury announced on Wednesday, July 30, a new package of sanctions against Iran, saying the measures target activities through which Tehran generates financial revenue from maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, the Treasury Department said the sanctions include 10 entities and eight oil tankers, adding that six of the designated entities are based in China.

The announcement comes amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran, following U.S. President Donald Trump's warning that the United States would launch powerful strikes against Iran after the U.S. and Jordanian militaries announced they had intercepted Iranian missiles fired toward Jordan.

Regional Escalation

Earlier on Wednesday, the Jordanian Armed Forces announced that they had intercepted five missiles launched from Iran toward Jordanian territory, saying the operation was successfully carried out without any casualties.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense of Kuwait said it had detected and destroyed several drones and missiles in Kuwaiti airspace. The ministry reported limited material damage to some vital facilities and said fires caused by the attacks had been brought under control. U.S.

Airstrikes Resume

In a related development, United States Central Command announced that it had carried out airstrikes against dozens of targets inside Iran in response to Iranian missile launches targeting U.S. forces in the Middle East one day earlier.

Ongoing Tensions

Since the outbreak of military hostilities between the United States and Iran in late February, the Strait of Hormuz has experienced persistent disruptions affecting maritime traffic despite temporary ceasefires and the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two sides earlier in July. Iran continues to insist that commercial vessels use the shipping lane adjacent to its coastline in exchange for service fees, while the United States maintains restrictions targeting Iranian port activities.
