Welat TV – Erbil
On Monday, the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, will visit the Syrian capital, Damascus, where he will hold talks with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on bilateral relations between Erbil and Damascus, as well as several political and security issues of mutual interest.
A source in the Kurdistan Region told “Welat TV” on Sunday, August 2, 2026, that the visit will include a meeting between the president of the Kurdistan Region and the Syrian president to discuss ways to strengthen relations between the two sides and expand cooperation in various fields.
The visit is also expected to cover many key issues, most notably strengthening relations between Erbil and Damascus, the situation of the Kurds in Syria, and their participation in the transitional government, as part of efforts aimed at supporting stability and advancing the political process in the country.
Discussions are also expected to cover developments related to the implementation of the January 29 agreement signed between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces SDF, as well as the SDF integration process and the institutions of the “Autonomous Administration” into the Syrian government’s institutions, given that the Kurdistan Region is one of the guarantors of the agreement’s implementation.
The visit comes amid a notable improvement in relations between the Kurdistan Region and Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, as the Kurdistan Region played a pivotal and prominent role in bridging the differences between the Syrian government and the SDF, thereby contributing to the January 29 agreement, which stipulated the integration of the SDF and “Autonomous Administration” institutions into the institutions of the Syrian state.
