Putin Appoints Dmitry Dogadkin as Russia's New Ambassador to Syria

Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed diplomat Dmitry Dogadkin as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Syria, succeeding Alexander Yefimov.

The two presidential decrees were published on the official Russian legal information portal on Monday, Aug. 3, 2026. One decree states, "Appoint Dmitry Nikolayevich Dogadkin as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Syrian Arab Republic."

Putin also signed a separate decree relieving Alexander Yefimov of his duties as Russia's ambassador to Syria, clearing the way for Dogadkin to assume the post.

The appointment comes as the Syrian government has said it is seeking to reset relations with Russia on the basis of renewed mutual cooperation across a range of sectors, including security, energy, and food security.
