Syrian Petroleum Company Outlines Plans to Develop Rmelan Oil Fields and Surrounding Area

Speaking to Welat TV during a field visit to the area on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026, Walid Youssef, deputy chief executive officer of the Syrian Petroleum Company, said the current plans are aimed at expanding and modernizing the Rmelan fields in order to improve production efficiency and enhance the working environment.

Youssef said the company has taken steps to address environmental pollution at the oil fields, including halting the discharge of approximately 120,000 barrels of contaminated water that had posed an environmental risk.

He added that maintenance work is also underway on water injection wells to restore them to service and help reduce pollution in the area. He said the visit was also intended to prepare plans for developing the national workforce and introducing advanced technologies into oil production operations to improve efficiency and boost output.

Plans to Improve Salaries and Working Conditions Meanwhile, Sami al-Jassem, head of the Hasaka Oil Workers' Union, said the field tour included an assessment of operations at the Rmelan Oil Fields Directorate and the Sweidiya Gas Investment Project as part of efforts to prepare future plans aimed at increasing oil production.

Al-Jassim said the proposed plans also include improving employees' working conditions through higher salaries, increased allowances, and enhanced employment benefits for workers in the oil sector.

The Syrian Petroleum Company announced in June that it had held talks with the U.S.-based HKN Energy on the development and investment of the Rmelan oil fields under a 25-year agreement.
