Syrian Grain Agency Receives 2.7 Million Tons of Wheat, Surpassing Annual Domestic Demand

The Syrian Grain Agency announced that it has received approximately 2.7 million tons of wheat during the current harvest season from across the country's provinces, exceeding Syria's estimated annual requirement of 2.55 million tons.
Ahmed Qadoun, Deputy Director-General of the Syrian Grain Agency, told the state-run SANA news agency on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, that the continued increase in wheat deliveries beyond domestic consumption needs reflects the country's ability to meet local demand and achieve self-sufficiency in wheat production.
Qadoun said the agency is continuing to receive wheat from farmers as long as marketable quantities remain available, noting that no final deadline has been set for closing procurement centers. He added that most collection centers have already ceased operations after receiving all available crops within their respective geographical areas.
He explained that the agency has adopted a multi-level storage strategy to preserve wheat quality, including storing grain in silos and grain bins, carrying out regular fumigation, and using enclosed warehouses equipped for grain preservation. Temporary open-air storage is also used when necessary, in accordance with specific technical standards.
Qadoun added that the agency is simultaneously implementing projects to rehabilitate and expand silos and storage facilities across the country in order to increase storage capacity ahead of future harvest seasons.
Regarding payments to farmers, he confirmed that the agency has transferred all invoices and records of received wheat to the Agricultural Cooperative Bank, which is responsible for disbursing payments. He noted that payments are being processed according to the approved schedule.
The agency said these measures are part of its broader strategy to strengthen grain storage capacity, enhance food security, and ensure a stable supply of flour for bakeries throughout the country.
