Syria and Iraq Discuss Strengthening Judicial Cooperation and Developing Legal Coordination

Syrian Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais and President of Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council Faiq Zidan discussed ways to strengthen judicial and legal cooperation between the two countries during a meeting at Tishreen Palace in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

During the meeting, held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, al-Wais said Syria hopes that the progress witnessed in its economic and security relations with Iraq will serve as an impetus for strengthening judicial and legal coordination and developing channels of communication between the justice institutions of the two countries, according to the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

The Syrian Justice Minister affirmed his country’s commitment to building balanced and positive relations with its neighbors, noting that Syria is implementing a comprehensive judicial reform project aimed at strengthening the independence and integrity of the judiciary, improving judicial competence, ensuring effective justice, and simplifying procedures for citizens.

For his part, Zidan stressed the importance of the historic relations between Iraq and Syria, emphasizing the Iraqi judiciary’s commitment to opening new avenues for cooperation between the two sides in a manner that contributes to developing judicial work and consolidating the rule of law in both countries.

On Thursday, an Iraqi judicial delegation headed by Supreme Judicial Council President Faiq Zidan arrived in Syria to discuss several files and issues of mutual interest between the two countries.
